The Ministry of Public Education was therefore reconstituted (together with the Ministry of University and Research) on 17 May 2006 by the Prodi II government due to a spin-off from MIUR; on 7 May 2008, the Berlusconi IV government reincorporated the two departments into MIUR, in implementation of the 2008 Finance Law, No. 244/2007, which returned to the original configuration of the Bassanini reform.
With the decree-law n. 1 of 2020 the Ministry of Education, University and Research is suppressed with the simultaneous establishment of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of University and Research.
